The Harry Potter fans among you will instantly recognise this sage quote, referring to a certain Dark Lord:
“Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself”
Wise words indeed – another great example is “the Dark Web”. A name which conjures up fear of all kinds illegal, illicit and dangerous threats. And, to a reasonable extent this is justified. It’s certainly true that bad actors use this very darkness to conceal activities we should be concerned about. Given so many of aspects of our businesses are ‘digitally exposed’ these days, we would be wise to want to understand these threats, so that we can better protect against them.
But, the Dark Web isn’t called the Dark Web for nothing. Indeed, there are plenty of shady and gloomy parts of the surface and deep web too. This opaqueness obscures threats, making it impossible to understand the risk they pose and act on it.
In the world of fine art and photography the name given to creating contrast and focus from light and dark is “chiaroscuro” and it works by illuminating the features most important to the masterpiece. It’s a concept that really appealed to us because it perfectly describes how our solutions help our customers protect against digital risk. To put it simply, you don’t have to shine a floodlight across the whole surface, deep and Dark Web. You simply need to illuminate the areas that could potentially affect you to reveal a spectrum of risk.
That’s what we do. We look beyond your network to illuminate this spectrum, so that you can take the action you need to protect your business and have the confidence to continue on your digital journey.
So, we thought, shouldn’t this concept be a bigger part of our own company? And that’s when we decided to rename our business Skurio; to give a modern, lighter feel to the term. It’s a name we hope you will love as much as we do and we truly hope that “love of a name can increase love of the thing itself” too.
